Stainless steel cookware has now become a staple in everyone’s home. Gone are the days when mud or clay or copper or brass pots and pans were used for cooking on a regular basis.
Stainless steel is user-friendly, has good heat conductivity and is easier to clean than other metals. But stainless steel is not exactly stainless.
It also needs some amount of care so that it sparkles like new. Here are some tips to care for your stainless steel cookware.
Stainless Steel Cookware Cleaning Process:
1. General care
Washing with hot, soapy water is the best way to clean stainless steel utensils daily. Wet the vessels with water to remove the remnants of food. Then wash using a soft scrubber dipped in warm, soapy water. If the stains are stubborn, you can use a nylon brush. Do not use abrasive scrubbers like steel wool to avoid scratching. After wash, wipe it dry with a non-abrasive towel. If you use a dishwasher, remove the utensils before the last cycle, wipe it with a soft cloth and store.
2. Burned food stuck to the vessel
Put some hot soapy water enough to cover the stains, to remove stuck and burned food. Let it sit for an hour. Then put the pan on the stove and boil the water again. Let it cool till warm, then the stains will come off easily with a soft scrubber. Though abrasive scrubbers are very effective in removing burned food, it is not recommended to use them as they cause excessive scratching and damage the surface of the vessels.
3. Hard water stains
If your place has a supply of hard water or water that has high calcium content, you will notice white deposits on your stainless steel utensils over time. To remove that, you can make a mixture of one part of vinegar with three parts of water, put it in the pan and bring it to boil. After it has cooled down, wash the pan with hot, soapy water and dry by hand.
4. Brown stains
Stubborn brown stains are hard to wash off. For removing these stains effortlessly, you can use baking soda. Just mix baking soda with hot water and soak the pan in this mixture. Let it sit for two hours then wash it off and dry with a towel. The brown stains will vanish easily.
5. Water Stains
Make sure you wipe every surface of your stainless steel utensils clean after washing to prevent unsightly water stains. You can also wipe with a towel dipped in vinegar to make the surfaces sparkle.
6. Making them shine
A paste of baking soda is the best way to make stainless steel shine. Rub it on all surfaces using a soft scrubber like the Scotch Brite green scrub, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel. You can remove fingerprints using glass cleaners and wiping them off. Just make sure that you never use glass cleaners on surfaces which come in contact with food.
Stainless steel cookware does require some effort to keep clean than other cookware. But it is worth it in the long run because they are extremely durable and friendly to use.
